Did you know that Idaho Falls has a fantastic place where seniors can interact, stay active, and get help with difficult tasks? The Idaho Falls Senior Citizens’ Community Center serves to keep seniors involved and active. Through activities and programs at the center, as well as outreach, the center meets many needs of the senior community. Looking for a game of pinochle or bridge? You’ll find it at the center. There’s a fitness area as well as fitness classes that are low impact and designed to help you safely stay fit. You can participate in hobbies like woodcarving and beading with other enthusiasts. There are also days where volunteer advisors and lawyers come to talk through your needs. Each weekday, the center serves nutritious, hot meals for seniors from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Their outreach program delivers the hot meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults, as well as cold meals for the weekend. Winter brings an abundance of activities that let you enjoy nature’s beauty covered in snow. Most people think of skiing or ice-skating during this time. However, there’s another activity that is easy to learn and less strenuous on the body. Snowshoeing gives you an opportunity to explore the frozen landscapes in a safer, low-impact way. You’ll also get great health and fitness benefits. Snowshoeing is as easy as walking. The snowshoes provide stability and secure-footing as you move over the snow. The poles also assist with balance. Choosing somewhat flat or lightly-sloped terrain and shorter trails helps make snowshoeing more leisurely. You can select longer and steeper trails if you want more of a strenuous workout. A short drive away from Autumn Cove, Craters of the Moon National Park features a 1-mile Snowshoe Loop Trail that’s perfect for novices. If you have grandkids visiting this winter break, you won’t want to miss the special programs offered at ARTitorium on Broadway! From now through January 6 th , “Let It Snow!” provides special activities focused on kids from 0-12 years old. They’ll enjoy projects, movies, and other age-appropriate fun. Kids will love adding “fur” to the larger-than-life Abominable Snowman. They’ll also use magical puffy paint to animate snowmen, snow storms, and winter activities in a fun craft project. You’ll need to supervise this one, grown-ups! The fun continues as kids design custom snow globes and mitten patterns. They’ll be challenged to make the objects their own, whether they choose funky or fancy! And if you bring them on Friday, they can make cookies into art! Looking for a unique event to get into the holiday spirit? The Museum of Idaho is hosting its Olde Fashioned Christmas and Winter Festivals event. Celebrate the traditions of Christmas and view displays on Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and winter festivals from around the world. Compare Santa figurines and hundreds of nativity scenes to choose your favorite. You’ll marvel at the beautifully decorated trees and homemade gingerbread houses on display. There will also be a special event on Saturday the 16 th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can join the Northwest Living History Association for a special exhibit. Many of us have Christmas decorations that have been passed down to us or that we purchased when our kids were young. Because of that, decorating for the season brings wonderful memories and reminders of our traditions. But updating your Christmas décor can be fun as well. You don’t have to be a crafting expert or spend a bunch of money to change things up! Painted letters are a fun and inexpensive way to bring Christmas into your home. You can pick up wood letters at any craft store and spell out “Joy” or “Santa”. The letters can stand alone on a mantle nestled among a garland. You can hot glue them to a painted wood plaque and hang it on the wall or a door. Use acrylic paint to paint your letters in traditional red and green. You can even use colorful, tightly-wrapped yarn if you don’t want to paint them. Picking a different color scheme for your decorating can spice up the holidays as well. With the colder temperatures, comes preparation for winter and time to celebrate with family and friends. If you have not checked to see that your heat tape is functioning correctly, here is a friendly reminder to do so. The best way to protect the waterline that runs into your home is to not let it freeze in the first place. In addition to making sure your heat tape is functioning correctly, allow a small amount of COLD water to run in your home which keeps the water flowing through the waterline, thus helping prevent the water from freezing. The City of Idaho Falls has some wonderful tips on preventing frozen waterlines and what to do if you have a partially frozen line in your home.
