Preparing Your Manufactured Home For Winter Months

While the weather is still reasonable, you will want to go under the skirting and make sure you have heat tapes in place on all the pipes below the home to prevent frozen and burst pipes. Check your insulation as well and install additional layers where needed. Make sure your skirting on your manufactured home is securely fastened to prevent moisture from getting under the house where it could mold and to keep animals out. You may also want to make certain your rain gutters are cleaned out so that ice won't build up - the weight of an ice filled gutter can pull it away from the house and cause ice to force its way under the shingles where it can cause damage to your roof.

You will want to take some precautions inside your manufactured home as well. Check the seals on your windows for drafts and apply caulk strips where necessary. Make sure all latches work properly so they will close tightly. You may want to purchase a roll of clear plastic sheeting to put over the windows to add a thermal layer of insulation. A narrow gap around a door can cause the furnace to run more often costing you precious dollars as well. Self-adhesive weatherstripping applied around the door frame will help create a tight seal and prevent drafts.

One last area the tends to let cold air in is your electrical outlets. You can find pre-cut foam insulation pads to fit most any light switch or outlet combination. They are inexpensive and easy to apply to the back side of  your switch plates and outlet covers. If you take these few simple steps, you should enjoy a comfortable winter in your manufactured home.
