Image
Idaho Falls is lucky to have a fantastic zoo in our backyard. The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park puts on a variety of fun programs throughout the year for all ages. Its regular season ends on October 7 th , so before it does, why not plan a trip to “talk” to the animals? These monkeys are named for their bright orange mane. They might resemble the king of the jungle with their fur, but their size makes them unique. Weighing in at around one pound, these tiny flyers stand out amongst the lush green trees of their habitat. Nine-year-old Tam and four-year-old Madison made their debut on May 25 th and are right at home now. You won’t want to miss the zoo’s newest grey gibbon, Sahra. COOL OFF WITH A HOMEMADE COFFEE DRINK

Image
Summer and frozen drinks go hand in hand, but paying for those treats can add up quickly. Making your own frozen drinks at home is an easy and fun way to cool off while saving some cold, hard cash. So forget that trendy shop on the corner, and grab your blender! Blended coffee is a definite summertime treat. But it’s just as easy to make your own at home. The Pioneer Woman has a fantastic recipe that you can easily customize to your taste. Her recipe makes six servings, so you’ll want to adjust it depending on how many you’re serving. Planning ahead is key, since the most important ingredient is chilled, espresso or very strong brewed coffee. The stronger the coffee, the better, since you’ll be “watering it down” with lots of ice. The basic recipe includes milk, vanilla, and sweetened condensed milk or another sweetener like sugar or honey if you prefer. If you prefer creamier, richer blended coffee, you’ll want to throw in some half-and-half also. This recipe makes a ...

PLANTING YOUR SPRING GARDEN

Image
Getting your garden into shape for spring involves a lot of hard work and dirt. But once you’ve got the garden ready, the fun begins. Deciding what to plant is a fun way to spend your spring. The first step is to research plants that will perform well in your climate and are good for planting in the spring. Flowers such as lilacs and tulips are classics. If you prefer edible plants in your garden, leafy greens are a good bet. Perennials are the best option for budget-conscious planters. They are also good for those who prefer lower maintenance. Perennials will return for a couple years. They’re also hardy enough to survive harsh winters. Annuals live up to their namesake: they have to be replaced every year. GETTING YOUR HOME FRESH FOR SPRING

Image
After a long winter being closed-up, our homes often feel stale and musty. But getting your home feeling fresh doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. There are several easy things you can do to make it feel more welcoming. Getting fresh air circulating is one of the best ways to chase away odors. Open the windows and doors and turn the fans on circulate. You can use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms to help, especially if those rooms don’t have windows. Even improving airflow in your rooms can help. Removing clutter and even re-positioning furniture are two ways to create movement in your rooms. Investing in an air purifier is also a great solution for getting rid of lingering staleness in your home. There are many models of purifiers that are both powerful and inexpensive. Use a larger purifier for an open living and dining area. For smaller rooms, you can use a tabletop purifier. If you have a vacuum with a HEPA filter, make sure to change that out as...

TRY A NEW KIND OF TEA THIS SPRING

Image
Tea is a great addition to your diet, and spring is a perfect time to try out new flavors. There are so many varieties that you may wonder where to start. If you’re new to tea, head to a tea shop! You’ll be able to get expert advice based on your favorite flavors. You’ll also be able to taste multiple kinds of tea. All teas are derived from the same leaves. However, they vary based on how long they’re processed. They also vary based on the oxidation process. Nowadays you can get tea with fruit or flowers added, something spicy with a little milk, or even medicinal tea. White tea is low in caffeine and very light. It is often too weak for people who enjoy stronger tastes. But white tea is perfect when paired with fruit flavors. You just have to be careful to brew it at a lower temperature and for a shorter time. Green tea is really close to the natural plant, which is great for health benefits. However, it can result in a strong, grassy taste that many people don’t e...

SPRING CLEANING ITEMS IN YOUR CLOSET

Image
Spring cleaning has many of us running around our homes trying to get every nook and cranny clean. But many of us neglect one important spot: our closets. In addition to cleaning the physical space, it’s helpful to evaluate the items within to prepare them for use in the warmer months. Often, we let items that need to be dry-cleaned or repaired pile up. Round up those items and take them in. You’ll be glad to have them back on the shelf in a usable state. For clothes already on the shelf or hangers, inspect them. Do any need repair such as a torn hem or a missing button? Are there stains you haven’t been able to eliminate? Take these items to be repaired as soon as possible. Don’t forget to inspect shoes and bags as well. A local shoe hospital can clean and polish your shoes, eliminating scuffs and discoloration. You can also obtain shoe kits to do the job yourself. Before you throw out your favorite bag or shoes, take them to a local shoe hospital. Many times, these it...

A FRESH START FOR SPRING

Image
Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time to air out your home and get it clean and fresh! While it may feel overwhelming to tackle your entire house at once, there are many ways to make it easier on you. Here are a few tips to help make spring cleaning more manageable. Making a checklist is a great first step. Not only does it help you focus on one thing at a time, but also it is very satisfying to see your progress! Instead of listing tasks that have to be done throughout the house, section off your list by rooms. Underneath each room, list the specific tasks for that room. That gives you a true picture of what remains to be done as you go. Tackling one room at a time saves energy and keeps you from having to backtrack. When you start in a room, scan it for items that do not belong there. Keep bins or boxes just outside the room to sort items that go in other parts of the house. Keep a trash bag inside the room to dispose of any debris or unwanted paper or other ...
